You may have noticed a few headsets, particular those from SteelSeries like the Arctis 5 and the Arctis 7, have a game changing “chatmix” feature. I say game changing because it truly is.

You’ll notice headsets with a chatmix feature don’t plug in via headphone jack. They must use either blue tooth or USB. That’s because these headphones work by telling your PC, that it’s actually two separate headsets being plugged in. I know it sounds crazy but it works.

So here’s the idea, chatmix is designed to be used with a voice chat program (Discord, Teamspeak, Skype, etc). Go into your programs settings, and set the default headphones to the first of the two headphones your PC should see. Then what you can really do is set all your default sounds (such as games) to the other available headphones your PC should see. Which, in reality is the same set, just another channel on it, sort of.

When your favorite game loads up, it’ll be running on one channel, while your voice chat program will be running on another. This allows you to use the dial, to find the right amount of balance in the volume levels of the two channels. I can’t tell you how much time and frustration this saves in a game when you can’t hear one or the other.

No more switching between programs and bumping the volume. Just reach over to the dial, either plugged in or built in, and turn it to your liking. Boom. Done. I look forward to the future where every headset is like this.
